This Week in Asheville: June 8-14

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Brandi Carlile

Tracing the singer/songwriter's rise to stardom, it's hard to pinpoint a single breakout moment. Her career has been something rarer: a steady, patient build, each release drawing a wider circle of devotees to her emotionally-arresting brand of country ballads. —Jonny Leather

at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium
Wednesday, June 10
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[folk, alt-country]

Modest Mouse

If you're old enough to remember when Modest Mouse unexpectedly dominated radio and MTV with "Float On," how's that midlife crisis treating you? So much time has passed that even the Johnny Marr era feels like another lifetime. Now, after decades on a major label, Isaac Brock & Co. return with An Eraser and a Maze, a record that finds the band reconnecting with its scrappier, independent roots.

Thinking of arriving fashionably late? Don't. Opening act Silver Triplets of the Rio Hondo — the weirdo psychedelic country outfit led by former Grails member William Slater — is not to be missed. —JL

Greg Mendez

On his Dead Oceans label debut, Beauty Land, the Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter stays true to his lo-fi roots, delivering an intimate collection of songs with the same hushed urgency as the incomparable Elliott Smith. Expect Mendez to break out in a big way as 2026 continues, so this is your notice to catch him before he graduates to larger rooms. —JL

at Static Age Records
Friday, June 12
Doors: 8pm / Show: 9pm

The Amazing Acro-Cats

Animal trainer Samantha Martin returns with her astounding clowder of feline tricksters. Last year's Halloween-themed shows were postponed before they could happen, so consider this weekend's three performances a long-overdue treat — spooky atmosphere included. —JL

at Wortham Center for the Performing Arts
Friday, June 12 / Show: 7pm
Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14 / Show: 2pm

Field Trip: Kevin Morby

The brilliant singer/songwriter/guitarist’s latest album, Little Wide Open, may feel a bit too familiar — more like a sequel to his previous stunner, This Is a Photograph, than the usual distinct experience he’s delivered throughout his career. But his live show is so magical that it’s likely to incorporate these new tunes without missing a beat. Plus, you get to see Liam Kazar — whose recent Asheville show was canceled on short notice — open the night. —Edwin Arnaudin
