This Week in Asheville: Feb. 2-8

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Taper’s Choice

Sure, these guys come with serious indie-rock cred, but the Voltron of Alex Bleeker (Real Estate), Dave Harrington (Darkside), Chris Tomson (Vampire Weekend), and Zach Tenorio (Arc Iris) is rapidly asserting itself as one of the most compelling jam bands around. An opening set by inventive, experimental musician Rich Ruth is also not to be missed. —Jonny Leather

Idle County

Originally slated to open for Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids), the Ben K. Lochen-led outfit now finds itself front and center. With Pryor postponing the date, the night has morphed into a killer free local showcase — one that’s well worth your time if you’re into sharp songwriting with a touch of twang. —JL

at Eulogy
Thursday, Feb. 5
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[alt-country, folk, alt-rock]

Langhorne Slim

In one of the unlikeliest pairings in recent memory, the folk troubadour from Langhorne, PA teamed up with members of pop-rock mega-stars Greta Van Fleet for his new album, The Dreamin’ Kind. It’s easily Slim’s most polished record to date — but rest assured, the singer/songwriter hasn’t made the leap to full-blown, anthemic stadium rock. —JL

at Grey Eagle Music Hall
Saturday, Feb. 7
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm

The Wham Bam Puppet Slam

You’d be hard-pressed to find something more intriguing on a Saturday night than a puppet show. Featuring a variety of acts and hosted by the enigmatic Toybox, it’s shaping up to be a delightfully strange experience. —JL
