This Week in Asheville: Jan. 26-Feb. 1

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Jon Spencer

The legendary frontman has been an electrifying force of nature since the ’80s. And despite an influential run with Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and numerous other projects, Spencer remains one of the most underrated figures of his generation. Now in his sixties, he remains as inspired as ever — and still fully capable of making you sweat. —Jonny Leather

Agriculture

On its 2025 sophomore record, The Spiritual Sound, the Los Angeles black metal quartet takes a clear leap forward — broadening the stylistic range of its sound without sacrificing the ear-shattering riffage that first put them on the map. —JL

The Wood Brothers

Better vibes are tougher to find in a live music setting than when Oliver Wood, Chris Wood, and Jano Rix take the stage. Every year or so, the phenomenally talented trio treat us to consecutive nights at downtown’s best venue, and each time it feels like the most wholesome and energizing family reunion, to the point that their big hit, “Luckiest Man,” was seemingly written just for you.  —Edwin Arnaudin

Lando Moss + True Loves

Here at Asheville Stages, we don’t just write and photograph — some of us are damn fine musicians, too. The latest project by one of our contributors is Lando Moss, which staff writer Daniel Walton (bass) describes as "wedged somewhere between the boulders of cosmic country, neo-soul, and good old-fashioned rock and roll." The trio warms up the stage for Seattle-based funk group True Loves in what promises to be a great night for busting a move. —EA

Friendship

2025 was a banner year for weird alt-country, and few artists made as big an impact as this Philly band did with its breakout Caveman Wakes Up. Five albums in, Dan Wriggins is finally getting his due as one of the most compelling songwriters and lyricists working today. If you missed the band’s exceptional performance at AyurPrana Listening Room last year, here’s your chance to make it right. —JL
