This Week in Asheville: Feb. 9-15

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Amelia Day

The young Nashville-based singer/songwriter appears poised for a breakout, making this an ideal chance to catch her early. Get there in time for McKinney, whose impressive debut album, Bones, is out today. —Jonny Leather

Marissa Nadler

The Nashville-based singer/songwriter writes dreamy ballads that feel made for a David Lynch (RIP) soundtrack. While she impressed at The Odd on her last trip through town, the AyurPrana Listening Room should better suit her reverb-drenched folk. Don’t miss the otherworldly atmospheric folk of Sacred Bones labelmate Maria B.C. in the opening slot. —JL

Nathanael Jordan

The local singer/songwriter’s last album, Honeymoon Phase, came out all the way back in 2018. A lifetime has passed since then. He returns this Friday with a new record, Shine, and fans will get an early taste at a release celebration also featuring sets from local alt-country mainstays Tombstone Poetry and Raleigh indie rockers Truth Club. —JL

Mdou Moctar (solo)

It’s difficult to overstate what a treat it is to catch the brilliant Nigerien guitarist and songwriter in such an intimate setting. The last time he came through town with his band, they delivered a thrilling, packed show at The Orange Peel. His usual backing trio — who performed at APLR last year as Takaat — won’t be joining him this time, so the night may be less raucous than a full-band set, but his spellbinding guitar work is more than enough to carry the room. —JL

Valgur

This duo from Oaxaca, Mexico makes delightfully off-kilter electronic pop — a sound Asheville doesn’t get nearly enough of. Pairing them with longtime local favorites Astoria and Cold Choir offers plenty of reasons to head out on a Sunday night. —JL
