This Week in Asheville: Sept. 9-15
Asheville’s wealth of live music offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Sour Widows / youbet
The co-headliners of Eulogy’s Wednesday night bill are a pair of young up-and-coming bands fresh off of a stop at Raleigh’s Hopscotch Music Festival. Hailing from the Bay Area, Sour Widows released its debut album, and it’s an excellent brew of dreamy alternative and indie rock. Similarly, the latest batch of songs by youbet — the project of NYC-based songwriter Nick Llobet — is contemplative and decorated by fuzz-tinged guitars. —Jonny Leather

The March Violets
Along with Sisters of Mercy, the reunited trio from Leeds was one of the definitive acts of the early ’80s goth rock scene. It’s been over four decades since the band released its debut single, and yet the group’s new album, Crocodile Promises, manages to tap into the haunted magic of that bygone era. —JL

The Nude Party
Keep your pants on! It’s not that sort of event. The septet (which did indeed used to perform in the buff) has moved on to the Catskills of New York after getting its start in nearby Boone, but the band’s Thursday night stop at Salvage Station is sure to be a homecoming of sorts. Evoking the mellow cool of The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones, The Nude Party is a throwback to another era. —JL

Built To Spill
The legendary indie rock trio from Boise, Idaho, comes to town pretty regularly, but this time around will be different. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s breakout sophomore album, they’ll be playing There’s Nothing Wrong With Love in its entirety. Cellist John McMahon, who played on the original recordings, will be joining the current lineup of Doug Marsch, Melanie Radford, and Teresa Esguerra for this special round of dates.
Fans are advised to arrive early because miniaturized is not to be missed. The San Diego group — featuring members of Pinback, Rocket From the Crypt, No Knife, and Buckfast Superbee — released its excellent debut album last year. —JL

Idles
As thoughtful as they are heavy, the British quintet continues to be impossible to pin down. The group’s latest album, TANGK, may lack some of the ferocity of earlier records but it’s still plenty tense, and it’s gonna be a blast to see the band play songs like “Gift Horse” and “Dancer” live. —JL

Take in The Wallflowers, 49 Winchester, Ashley McBryde, The Red Clay Strays, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, and Sam Bush on the three large outdoor platforms, but also be sure to catch up-and-coming acts on a range of more intimate spaces, nestled indoors and outside this charming, music-loving town.
