This Week in Asheville: Sept. 16-22
Asheville’s wealth of live music offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Fruition
Hailing from Portland, Ore., this five-piece folk rock ensemble has been delivering rich three-part harmonies from a trio of songwriters for 15 years. Now they’re on the road in support of their new album, How to Make Mistakes — an apt title for their first self-produced album, which encouraged them to take unprecedented risks while recording each track live, an approach that enhances their already impressive stage show. —Edwin Arnaudin

Black Pumas
Over the past several years, the soul-infused rock group from Austin has quickly emerged as one of the biggest bands in the U.S. Not everyone gets invited to perform as part of a presidential inauguration, but Black Pumas did in 2021. With them seemingly having played every major music festival and late night TV show in 2024, expect a top notch performance at Rabbit Rabbit. —Jonny Leather

The dB’s
Although the original lineup featuring singer/songwriter Chris Stamey only lasted a few years, the quartet released a pair of iconic power pop masterpieces in 1981 — Stands for deciBels and Repercussion — which left a lasting influence on the wave of indie rock bands that followed. On the road for the first time in 12 years, Stamey and fellow founding members Peter Holsapple, Will Rigby, and Gene Holder are back together and celebrating the reissue of the group’s debut album. —JL

Faun
It’s not every day that a pagan folk group from Germany comes to town, but when they do it’s best to hide your goats. The sextet has been active for over 20 years and has a sound suited for a sinister Ren Faire, so this should be more than interesting. —JL
at The Orange Peel
Sunday, Sept. 22
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[pagan folk, darkwave]

Field Trip: Weezer + Flaming Lips + Dinosaur Jr.
Any one of these three rock legends are worth the price of admission individually, so to have the chance to see them all on the same bill a little over an hour away (and for $25, if you snagged a Concert Week ticket) warrants pinching oneself to make sure you’re not dreaming. Reports from early stops on this joint tour have been extremely encouraging, particularly Weezer’s performances of The Blue Album in honor of its 30th anniversary and Flaming Lips’ giant pink inflatable robot routine. —EA
