This Week in Asheville: Nov. 3-9
Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Purity Ring
Continuing to build on its reputation for crafting otherworldly dance music, the Canadian electronic duo released its self-titled fourth LP in September. The album serves as the imagined soundtrack to a fictional RPG, and, as usual, the visuals on this tour have been nothing short of stunning. —Jonny Leather

Viagra Boys
With lyrics that delve deep into the brainrot of internet conspiracies, the Swedish post-punk band may not be the most likely candidate for breakout success, but its timely weirdness has connected to a wide audience. With unhinged Atlanta garage rockers The Black Lips kicking things off, this show’s guaranteed to be crazy right from the start. —JL

Mariee Siou
Matching poetic lyrics with a soothing delivery, it’s clear why the singer-songwriter has frequently drawn comparisons to such icons as Joni Mitchell, Joanna Newsom, and Nick Drake. —JL

Beach Fossils + Being Dead
Since the release of Beach Fossils’ jangly lo-fi debut, frontman Dustin Payseur and his bandmates have steadily expanded their sound while preserving the carefree spirit that first drew fans in.
Speaking of nonchalant pop greatness, Austin trio Being Dead is one of the most refreshing acts in years — so consider yourself lucky to catch them as the bonus opening act before the headliners take the stage. —JL

Laughs For SNAP
The current regime seems intent on fucking over just about everyone, and its latest move threatens the food security of millions. Thankfully, organizations like MANNA FoodBank are stepping up to help those in need. In response, Modelface Comedy has organized a show to bring some much-needed chuckles while supporting MANNA’s mission. It’s a chance to back the community — and laugh away the existential gloom. —JL

Asheville Sessions
River Whyless + Tyler Ramsey + Toubab Krewe + Floating Action
In 1925, a team from New York’s OKeh General Phonograph Corporation set up a pop-up recording studio in the Vanderbilt Hotel on Haywood Street. Those sessions proved pivotal in capturing and preserving the Appalachian folk sound of the era. It’s a landmark moment in Asheville’s rich musical history — one well worth celebrating.
A full week of centennial events will feature panel discussions and live performances, culminating in a Saturday night showcase at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. The stellar lineup of local artists will not only perform their own material but also pay tribute to the original 1925 recordings — now being reissued for the first time. Who’s gonna perform “They Always Pick On Me”? There’s only one way to find out. —JL

Geese
This show has all the makings of one people will be talking about for years. The recent release of Getting Killed — a strong Album of the Year candidate — has propelled the uncompromising Brooklyn rock band into true breakout territory. Their rapid rise means future shows will be in much larger venues, but with this Grey Eagle date already on the books, the lucky few who snagged tickets early will get to experience the band in one of the smallest spaces they’re likely to play for a long time. —JL
