This Week in Asheville: Nov. 10-16
Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Stavros Halkias
Over the years, the stand-up built a cult following as a kind of leftist counterpoint to the growing wave of anti-woke comedian bros on the right. But with a starring role alongside Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in Bugonia, the latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos, the Baltimore comic seems poised for an even bigger breakout. —Jonny Leather

If you wander into this show by chance, you might think you’ve stumbled onto a ritual sacrifice. Cloaked in nightmarish costumes and conjuring unsettling, trance-like chants, this enigmatic Texas collective delivers an experience unlike anything you’ve seen before. —JL

Militarie Gun
Hardcore bands weaving in pop sensibilities is nothing new — but the recent surge of melodic hardcore acts across the U.S. feels like a real moment. With Turnstile evolving into one of the biggest rock bands on the planet while sounding more and more like The Police, it’s fair to ask: who’s next? With its adventurous, hook-filled new album, God Save the Gun, this LA group could be poised to make the leap from sweaty club shows to festival main stages. —JL

Orches Limita
In October, local musician Chad Beattie dropped his project’s debut album, MAXIMALIMISERABLISM — an intoxicating soundscape built around his instrument of choice, the hammered dulcimer, and inspired by experimental pioneers like La Monte Young and William Basinski. Thursday night’s performance serves as both a release celebration and a benefit for Palestine. —JL

Murder By Death
After more than two decades of relentless touring and cultivating a devoted cult following, the gothic country sextet from Bloomington, Ind., is calling it a day — but not before one final run of shows. Though Adam Turla and company released their tenth album, Egg & Dart, earlier this year, fans can expect a farewell set steeped in the band’s signature mix of somber, whiskey-soaked favorites and dark, punk-informed Americana. Get there early for a set by American Aquarium’s BJ Barham. —JL
