This Week in Asheville: March 9-15
Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Ratboys
Alt-country is having its moment, and this Tuesday night double bill features two of the scene's most exciting emerging acts. Chicago's Ratboys headline on the strength of their excellent new record, but Philly's Florry are equally worth your time — don't be the dummy who skips the opener, only to regret it later. —Jonny Leather

Gary Numan
The British frontman first emerged in the late ’70s with Tubeway Army, embracing electronics early and sounding like virtually no one else at the time. After a pair of albums with that band, the synth pioneer stepped out under his adopted stage name and released his career-defining 1979 masterpiece, The Pleasure Principle.
Though forever linked to his #1 hit “Cars,” Numan has at times been unfairly dismissed as a one-hit wonder. In reality, he’s remained a deeply influential figure, continually evolving his sound rather than leaning on nostalgia. Decades into his career, he’s also proven himself to be a formidable live performer. —JL

Cat Power
It’s somehow been 20 years since Chan Marshall released The Greatest. The singer/songwriter had already achieved cult favorite status with her previous six albums, but the gorgeous LP, recorded at Memphis’ Ardent Studios with a collection of legendary players as her backing band, was heralded as an instant classic. The two decades that have passed since its release have done little to tarnish that status, so it’ll be a treat to hear her perform the record in full on Friday night. —JL

The Hives
Originally scheduled for October 1, 2024, the show was derailed by Mother Nature — but the wait is over. Sweden's kings of early 2000s garage rock are back, and they're bringing everything we've missed. —JL
