This Week in Asheville: March 2-8

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Coma Cinema

Following a lengthy hiatus, Mathew Lee Cothran revived the Coma Cinema moniker last year for its first album in nearly a decade. Grand Delusion is a reminder that Cothran was an early master of the bedroom pop aesthetic that’s only become more and more popular in recent years.  —JL

Nothing

There’s no shortage of shoegaze bands, which makes this Philly-based project’s staying power all the more impressive — a testament to vocalist/guitarist Nicky Palermo’s songwriting. Since its 2014 debut Guilty of Everything first put the band on the map, the lineup surrounding Palermo has continually shifted, contributing to an evolving sound. Six years after The Great Dismal, Palermo returns with the latest incarnation of the group and a new album, A Short History of Decay — its most ambitious and expansive collection yet.

You may be tempted to show up late due to the presence of three openers, but you’ll surely regret missing Violent Magic Orchestra. The Japanese project, which has been described as “Aphex Twin invaded by Burzum,” promises to be unlike anything you’ll see this year. —JL

C. Shreve the Professor

One of the central figures in Asheville’s hip-hop scene, the Deep Gap-based artist released his latest album, Shreve Got Lost, Vol. 1, back in December. Now, the sharp-tongued MC is giving it the proper celebration it deserves with an official release show. —JL
