Michael Hurley
Considered by some to be the godfather of freak folk, the 84-year-old Hurley doesn’t have the name recognition of some of his contemporaries from the Greenwich Village folk scene, but his career has endured thanks to a devout cult following. —Jonny Leather

Water Damage
Running 10 members deep, this experimental band out of Austin can generate quite a wall of sound. Unlike many acts tagged as minimalist drone, they rock out a bit hard. Maybe it’s all of that percussion. Fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sunn O))), and Oren Ambarchi will not want to miss this. —JL

Twenty years ago, modern psych pop masterpiece The Sunlandic Twins was released into the world. With musician Kevin Barnes taking full control of the project and delving deeper into funky electronics, the album — as well as the preceding Satanic Panic In The Attic — helped to establish of Montreal as a defining indie rock act of the era. On Saturday, they’ll celebrate the record’s anniversary with a performance of the album in full. —JL

Cowboy Sadness
On its 2024 debut, Selected Jambient Works Vol. 1, the trio of Peter Silberman (The Antlers), David Moore (Bing & Ruth), and Nicholas Principe (Port St. WIllow) conjures the kind of magical soundscapes that are a joy to get lost within. Speaking of which, they’ll be performing two unique sets on Sunday at the West Asheville listening room. The first — presented as a Sound Bath — will be an immersive improvisation, while the second will be a more traditional concert. —JL

Your favorite lyricist’s favorite lyricist, this acclaimed folk artist added to her rich recording catalog with 2022’s Dark Enough To See The Stars — itself on the heels of her insightful memoir, Saved by a Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting. Back on the road to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her debut album, Drag Queens in Limousines, Gauthier teams with the River Arts District listening room for a fully-seated, early evening show that promises to end the weekend on a high note. —Edwin Arnaudin

Jaguardini
With all the banjos and fiddles around town, it can sometimes be easy to forget this city’s deep connection with the synthesizer. Thankfully, this excellent Sunday night bill should please anyone with an affinity towards electronic music. Not only are there two of the area’s best synth-heavy acts, but Harrison, Va.-based Jaguardini’s lo-fi brand synth pop is wildly fun. —JL
