This Week in Asheville: June 9-15

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Vampire Weekend

Only God Was Above Us might not carry quite the same buzz it had back in 2024 when Vampire Weekend was originally scheduled to play here, but it’s still a serious treat to catch the indie-pop titans performing cuts from one of last year’s best records. Don’t sleep on the opener, either: Brooklyn-based post-punk quintet Geese — not to be confused with the jam band Goose — seem poised for a major breakout, especially following frontman Cameron Winter’s brilliant and acclaimed solo release. —Jonny Leather

But seriously, folks: third time’s the charm for these troopers, who were slated to open Rabbit Rabbit in summer 2020 (whoops!) then became one of the venue’s post-Helene postponements last fall. Fortunately, Ezra Koenig & Co. like us enough to keep trying, and with 30-plus song sets being the norm on this tour — complete with lengthy encores featuring a wide, wide, wide range of covers — we’re in for a treat. —Edwin Arnaudin

beabadoobee

At just 24 years old, Beatrice Laus has already cemented her status as a rising star with three successful albums. The Filipino-British singer/songwriter has opened for megastars like The 1975, Halsey, and Taylor Swift, and cites influences such as Elliott Smith and Mazzy Star — though her sound arguably carries broader pop appeal than either. —JL

Ginger Root

Cameron Lew has perfectly described his sound as “aggressive elevator soul.” I can’t do better than that. The California-based musician and his band are spending much of 2025 on the road opening for Japanese Breakfast, so catching them in an intimate Asheville venue is a rare treat. —JL

Mannequin Pussy

There’s only one way a band with a name this provocative gets so popular: brute force. Since forming in 2010, the Philadelphia punk quartet has been on a relentless rise, honing a sound that fuses hardcore punk fury, Riot Grrrl energy, and a touch of shoegaze haze. The records hit hard, but Missy Dabice and crew elevate it to another level on stage. —JL

Modest Mouse

Sure, these Northwest indie rock icons make frequent stops in town — but it’s hard to complain. On their last visit, Isaac Brock and his bandmates traded the 4,000 capacity Rabbit Rabbit for the 1,050 Orange Peel, but return to the great outdoors now known as Asheville Yards with their impressively adaptive sound. As an added bonus for indie rock lifers, Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch opens. —JL

David J

As one of the minds behind the immortal goth anthem “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” David John Haskins has long since secured his place in music history. A founding member of both Bauhaus and Love & Rockets, it’s a bit disheartening that his name alone isn’t enough to fill a larger venue — but it’s hard to complain about the rare chance to experience a legend up close.—JL

Aparna Nancherla

Even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you’ve probably laughed at Aparna Nancherla. The D.C.-born comic has popped up everywhere — from What We Do in the Shadows and Crashing to Bob’s Burgers, Search Party, and Space Force. She even voiced BoJack Horseman’s half-sister, Hollyhock. Most importantly? She’s hilarious. —JL

Wallows + Porches

To be honest, Wallows — the poppy indie rock trio from LA — only recently landed on my radar. Fronted by a pair of former child actors, their polished tunes are pleasant enough — but don’t quite pack a punch. In contrast, opener Porches has been a consistent source of inventive, emotionally rich bedroom pop for years. Aaron Maine seemed poised to break into larger venues with 2018’s The House, but a string of more lo-fi, adventurous releases since then — while some of his most compelling work —  haven’t quite capitalized on that earlier momentum. —JL

Quintron

In a landscape crowded with uninspired carbon copies, Robert Rolston stands out as a true original — an idiosyncratic weirdo who may always fly under the radar, but never fails to deliver a wildly entertaining experience to anyone lucky enough to catch Quintron in action. —JL
