This Week in Asheville: July 22-28
Asheville’s wealth of live music offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Mates of State
The husband-and-wife duo of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner have been relatively inactive for a decade or more, which makes this listing all the more surprising. In a world that desperately needs a bit of joy, the pair’s infectious indie pop is more than welcome in this town. —Jonny Leather

Fruit Bats
Wasn't Eric D. Johnson just in town with folk rock supergroup Bonny Light Horseman? Goes to show how much the golden-voiced singer/songwriter and multi-instrument loves Asheville. Heading west after playing Merge 35 in Carrboro, Johnson and labelmate will hold court down by the banks of the French Broad — and more than likely share a few songs from their forthcoming collaborative EP. —Edwin Arnaudin

Steel Pulse
Salvage Station has a knack for bringing in reggae royalty, and this one is no exception. Founded in 1975, this legendary Birmingham act was an important link between their Jamaican influences and England’s burgeoning punk scene. Despite some lineup changes over the years, the group has remained active, with its most recent album, Mass Manipulation, receiving a Grammy nomination in 2019. —JL

Mary Timony
The greatness of Helium may be somewhat forgotten in the time passed since the alternative rock band’s ’90s run, but that doesn’t mean that the group’s frontwoman hasn’t left a lasting mark on what’s come since. Timony’s guitar sound and vocal influence can be heard in more modern acts like Wednesday, Julien Baker and Sunday night’s opener Speedy Ortiz. Her new album, Untame the Tiger, proves that she hasn’t lost her magic touch.
