This Week in Asheville: April 14-20

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Being Dead

If the Austin-based indie rockers' 2023 debut, When Horses Would Run, marked them as a band to watch, last year’s jangle-pop gem, Eels, cemented their status as one of the best young bands around. Catch them now before they make the leap to much bigger stages. —Jonny Leather

w/ Seismic Sutra
at Grey Eagle Music Hall
Wednesday, April 16
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[indie rock, jangle pop]

Glaive

Still only 25 years old, Hendersonville’s own Ash Blue Gutierrez has already released a pair of albums and amassed a huge fanbase. An uninhibited, eclectic mix of electronic pop, emo, rap and whatever else he’s into, Glaive’s sound is very Gen Z. Profits from the sold out show will go to benefit ArtsAVL. —JL

w/ Jane Remover / erica / Dazgxd
at The Orange Peel
Thursday, April 17
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[alternative, pop, rap]

Tank & The Bangas

This is exactly the kind of explosively vibrant, deeply soulful music that can only emerge from New Orleans. Tarriona "Tank" Ball and company broke out in 2017 as winners of NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest and haven’t looked back. Their records have been top notch R&B collections but it’s on stage where they truly shine. —JL

at Grey Eagle Music Hall
Friday, April 18
Doors: 9:30pm / Show: 10pm
[R&B, pop soul]

La Luz

With a sound that blends the best aspects of surf rock and girl groups into something modern, the Shana Cleveland-fronted quartet from Seattle has been a steady, under-the-radar source of quality tunes for years. —JL

at Grey Eagle Music Hall
Saturday, April 19
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[indie rock]

Cheekface

Greg Katz’s talk-sung delivery over infectious indie rock melodies makes him a charming throwback to the ’90s alternative era when being a little goofy was embraced. Former Stellastarr* bassist Amanda Tannen enhances the sound with smooth basslines and dreamy backing vocals, adding a touch of Kim Deal’s signature cool. —JL

Corridor / Robber Robber

It's not always easy to drag yourself out on a Sunday night, especially if you spent the day gorging on Easter candy, but this double bill of up-and-coming bands is worth the effort. The Montréal- and Burlington-based quartets each released solid records in 2024 that should appeal to fans of the more straightforward indie rock of the genre's golden era. —JL
