This Week in Asheville: April 13-19

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Dead Meadow

One of the defining acts of stoner rock, this D.C. institution has been a cornerstone of the genre since forming in the late 1990s. That they're playing somewhere as intimate as Eulogy feels almost unbelievable, but you won't hear any complaints from me. —Jonny Leather

Waxahatchee + MJ Lenderman

Katie Crutchfield and Jake Lenderman's musical bond has grown steadily since their 2024 Waxahatchee collaboration "Right Back to It," extending further with the formation of Snocops, a band that also includes Katie's sister Allison and Brad Cook. Their co-headlining appearance at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium promises the best of both worlds: individual sets from each artist and plenty of time together on stage.

Don’t be surprised if the pair loop in opener Brennan Wedl at some point as well. Crutchfield and Wedl teamed up for an excellent cover of Kathleen Edwards’ “Six O’Clock News” back in March. —JL

They Are Gutting a Body of Water

After releasing three albums since 2018, the Philadelphia shoegaze quartet broke through in a major way with Lotto in 2025, landing on countless year-end lists. Joining them is Nashville noise pop outfit Total Wife — a thrilling pairing of noisy, up-and-coming acts with bigger things ahead. —JL

Anand Wilder

Indie rock greats Yeasayer may have called it quits in 2019, but their spirit lives on as the talented ensemble’s members pursue solo careers — particularly the most prolific of the bunch, co-founder Anand Wilder. On tour in support of his excellent 2025 album, Psychic Lessons, the singer/songwriter and fellow guitarist/vocalist Jachary bring their duo act to town for a night of inventive harmonies and mind-blowingly catchy tunes.  —Edwin Arnaudin

Fust & Merce Lemon

When it comes to the next wave of alt-country, these co-headliners are names worth knowing. Durham's Fust and Pittsburgh's Merce Lemon both have ties to Asheville's own Drop of Sun Studios, and the two joined forces in late 2025 for a pair of George Jones covers. Don't sleep on opener Thomas Dollbaum, either — he's quickly establishing himself as one hell of a singer/songwriter. —JL

Natalie Jane Hill

Hopeful Woman, the latest release from the Asheville singer/songwriter, possesses that rare, timeless quality — the kind of songs that feel as though they've always existed, sung with the emotional sensitivity to ensure they always will. She'll celebrate the album's release with a special show, featuring an opening set by local psych pop masters Sham. -—JL

Alabama Shakes

Arena shows have never been my thing — the sheer size makes it hard to feel any real connection to the performer. But Brittany Howard possesses the voice and presence commanding enough to reach every corner of a massive venue. —JL

Hopefully you grabbed tickets before they sold out, because resale prices will cost you your first born. If you've never seen the legend live, maybe that's a price worth paying — and who are we to judge? —JL
