Review: James McMurtry at The Grey Eagle

Review: James McMurtry at The Grey Eagle

Renowned singer/songwriter James McMurtry brought his signature blend of Americana, rock, political commentary, and bone-dry wit to The Grey Eagle on Sept. 10. Backed by his seasoned band, McMurtry delivered a taut, compelling set that mixed such fan favorites as “You Got to Me,” “Choctaw Bingo,” and “No More Buffalo” with standout tracks from his excellent new album The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy.

The sold-out crowd was all in, packing the house early for McMurtry’s regular opener and bandmate, BettySoo, and responding with rapturous applause after each number. The room fell into reverent silence during a completely unplugged rendition of “Blackberry Winter,” a highlight from 2021’s The Horses and the Hounds. Perched on the edge of the stage with only his acoustic guitar and a hushed fan sing-along, McMurtry delivered the song with striking intensity.

The band rejoined after “Winter,” finding their groove on new tunes “The Color of Night” and “South Texas Lawman.” Between songs, McMurtry’s trademark wit surfaced in wry quips and travel anecdotes, adding context to his characters — outlaws, in-laws, travelers, lovers, and politicians (some of whom fit more than one category). His biting lyrical delivery and the band’s rich instrumentation brought these figures to life.

It’s refreshing to hear a well-traveled songwriter still uncover fresh stories to tell. McMurtry and his gifted ensemble proved that both the classics and the new material remain vital, making their Grey Eagle show a night of first-rate musicianship and timeless storytelling. Here's hoping they continue to make Asheville a regular stop in their travels.
