This Week in Asheville: Sept. 8-14

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Mary Lattimore

If you’ve never heard the euphoric sounds of this once (and future?) Asheville resident playing the harp, you’ve never ascended into heaven. —Jonny Leather

Boldy James

Eulogy has stepped up its hip-hop game this year, hosting standout performances from Billy Woods, PremRock, and clipping. This Atlanta rapper, an early signee to Nas’ Mass Appeal Records in 2013, has since sharpened his pen and deepened his artistry, with frequent collaborations alongside The Alchemist further cementing his reputation. —JL

PROF

The Twin Cities might not rival LA, New York, or Atlanta as a hip-hop epicenter, but from Atmosphere to Lizzo to Brother Ali, the region has cultivated a remarkable roster of talent. Among them, PROF has carved out his own lane, building a loyal following that now has him headlining back-to-back nights at The Orange Peel in anticipation of his forthcoming album, Good Time Boy. —JL

Pixies + Spoon

When the Pixies reunited in 2004, it was met with a feverish hype, though few could have guessed that the quartet — sans Kim Deal — would remain active for another two decades. The band’s consistent touring has them being taken for granted, but those classic tunes still sound as great as ever. With perpetually-underrated but legendary Austin, TX indie rock quintet Spoon sharing the bill, it’s the perfect lure for every aging Gen-Xer and Millennial in the region. —JL

Claire Rousay

Don’t let this one slip by. Over the past decade, the Canadian/American artist has established herself as one of the leading voices in ambient and experimental music. Experiencing her work in such an intimate setting promises to be something truly special. —JL
