This Week in Asheville: Sept. 22-28

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Deafheaven

Blending George Clarke’s guttural screams with a ferocious mix of black metal and shoegaze, the San Francisco band has carved out a place at the forefront of contemporary American metal. Their sound may never court mainstream appeal, but their devoted cult following only grows stronger with each release. —Jonny Leather

Lightning Bolt

Formed in 1994, the Providence, N.H.-based noise rock duo became a cornerstone of the late-’90s and early-2000s DIY arts and music movement. Renowned for their chaotic performances in unconventional spaces, Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson have built a reputation on always delivering the unexpected. —JL

Lucy Dacus

The last time the singer/songwriter played this venue — then still known as Rabbit Rabbit — was on the space’s opening night in 2021 as support for Bright Eyes. Back then, she was a rising name in the indie scene. Today, she’s ascended to full-fledged stardom alongside her boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. Her brand of melancholy pop has since become a defining soundtrack for a younger generation. —JL

w/ Slow Pulp
at Asheville Yards

Woods

This is one of those lineups where the whole bill matters. Arrive early for the infectious lo-fi power pop of Sharp Pins, a band destined to headline their next visit. Stick around for a hit of psychedelic garage rock from Ty Segall and Cate Le Bon collaborator White Fence, before settling into the psych-tinged folk rock of Brooklyn indie mainstays Woods. —JL

Rilo Kiley

Before Jenny Lewis cemented her reputation as a solo star, she first earned lasting indie credibility with this beloved indie pop quartet. Long before that, she shared the screen with Fred Savage in the 1989 cult classic The Wizard. And if you grew up in the right era, you might also remember guitarist and vocalist Blake Sennett from Nickelodeon’s Salute Your Shorts. Still, it’s the music Lewis and Sennett created together that has stood the test of time. After a decade-long hiatus, the full lineup has finally reunited and it’s great to see them hitting stages again. Sharing the bill are their longtime Saddle Creek labelmates, The Faint. Known for their electrifying dance-punk shows, they’re a legendary band in their own right, and to miss them would be a huge mistake, even if it’s gonna be weird to see them in sunlight. —JL

Blue Dragons

A benefit show for a benefit album is no ordinary undertaking, but these local rockers are no ordinary band. Reuniting with original lead vocalist Sara Judy, the group will play two sets of high-energy tunes and donate all proceeds to Citizen Vinyl’s Do You Hear What I Hear? project — an LP of holiday standards performed by area artists, proceeds from which will be donated to nonprofits Lamplight AVL, BeLoved Asheville, and IamAvl. Win, win, win. —Edwin Arnaudin
