This Week in Asheville: Nov. 2-8

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Slow Accordion

Although the debut record from the Nashville supergroup of Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers), Ted Pecchio (Col. Bruce Hampton; Doyle Bramhall II; Tedeschi Trucks Band), Mark Raudabaugh (Sierra Hull; Donna the Buffalo; Jim Lauderdale) and Matt Glassmeyer (Billy Martin; Lambchop; Aqua Teen Hunger Force) is quite good on its own, there’s no doubt that this quartet of masterful improvisers is best experienced live. —Jonny Leather

AJJ

Formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad, this folk-punk group from Phoenix has somehow been at it for over 20 years. Over the span of nine studio albums, including this year’s Dirty Old Power, singer/songwriter Sean Bonnette has established himself as a politically outspoken lyricist with a sharp sense of humor. With the band’s Asheville stop falling the day after Election Day, this show could have an interesting atmosphere, depending on the results. —JL

Deer Tick

It’s hard to believe that the fiery folk rock band is performing in such an intimate space. The quartet from Rhode Island generally headlines far larger rooms — or, more frequently here, outdoor venues — so consider yourself warned that this is gonna be special. —JL

Sham

Since the late September release of Sham’s self-titled album, it’s been in constant rotation in my house. The latest batch of avant-folk tunes from local multi-instrumentalist Shane Justice McCord — with help from Mikey Powers, Charlie Boss, David Portner, Libby Rodenbough, and Ashley Paul — isn’t just one of this year’s most enchanting local releases but also a strong contender for album of the year. The LP will finally get a proper release celebration on Friday in West Asheville. —JL

at Trinity United Methodist Church

Hook of Moon

Speaking of excellent new local releases, Aidan Thomann dropped his debut album under the Hook of Moon moniker in mid-October. A vibrant synthesis of synth pop, indie rock, and emo, i am god yet god is not me is another testament to the depth of the Asheville music scene. —JL
