This Week in Asheville: July 14-20
Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
The Gaslight Anthem
When The ’59 Sound dropped in 2008, it was inescapable. The Jersey band had perfectly captured the anthemic rock energy so often linked to their home state — thanks in no small part to The Boss himself. And it didn't hurt that Springsteen was a fan. After a hiatus from 2015- 21, Brian Fallon and the gang are back, delivering their signature blend of heartland punk rock. —Jonny Leather

Mohanad Elshieky
Born in Benghazi, Libya, the Queens-based comedian has a backstory unlike most stand-ups. How many others can say they worked as translators and photographers during a civil war — or were detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection? He began his comedy career after moving to the states in 2014 and now works as a digital producer for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. His sharp wit and singular perspective make for a voice that stands out in the comedy world. —JL

Mini-Glowing Fest
Originally planned as a multi-day outdoor gathering at Charleston’s Woodlands Nature Reserve, Glowing Fest was derailed by inclement weather — a disappointing turn for a festival meant to unite artistic communities in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene. But rather than call it off, organizer Ryan Oslance (Ahleuchatistas) has pivoted to a scaled-down version happening this Friday-Sunday. While it may no longer feature the big-name draw of multiple Animal Collective members, the announced lineup is still well worth your attention. Expect a multidisciplinary experience blending music, performance art, sound baths, yoga, therapeutic sessions, and more. —JL

Deep Sea Diver
Though she’s long been a go-to guitarist for big names like Beck and The Shins, Jessica Dobson’s main project has flown largely under the radar — until now. With the release of her excellent new album, Billboard Heart, people are finally taking notice. As always, Dobson’s guitar prowess is front and center, backed by sharp songwriting and undeniable hooks.—JL

The Budos Band
The longtime Afrobeat collective from Staten Island doesn’t simply follow in the footsteps of Fela Kuti. Over two decades, they’ve evolved into a shapeshifting force, weaving in elements of heavy psych, soul, and broader influences to keep their sound fresh and compelling. As a bonus, Spoon bassist Benny Trokan opens the first ticketed show at The Grey Eagle’s new outdoor venue with his eponymous project’s appealing rock sounds. —JL

The Silver Doors + Fashion Bath + Tanner York
There’s something special about seeing our favorite local bands take the stage at The Orange Peel. Not every act gets that chance — nor should they — but these acts have earned it. Local psych rockers The Silver Doors seem to level up with every show, and their electric violin is bound to sound incredible through the Peel’s powerhouse system. They’re joined by like-minded rockers Fashion Bath and the delightfully catchy singer/songwriter Tanner York. —JL
