This Week in Asheville: Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

Iris Dement

After seeing this folk legend live, Goo Goo Dolls named their smash hit after her. What will you do after attending her latest local performance? —Jonny Leather

Rubblebucket

Considering the youthful exuberance of their shows, it’s hard to believe that this indie pop group from Brooklyn has been around for over 15 years. With a new album, Year of the Banana, proving to be as vibrant as anything the band has released, fans can expect a fun night. —JL

w/ Hannah Mohan
at The Orange Peel
Friday, Jan. 31
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[art pop, synth pop]

Tyler Ramsey

He performs here semi-regularly, and has been established for long enough that the hype is minimal, so it’s far too easy to take the local singer-songwriter for granted. New Lost Ages, the latest collection of songs by the former Band of Horses guitarist is a remarkable bunch of folk rock tunes that should sparkle in the hometown venue. —JL

w/ Spencer Thomas
at Grey Eagle Music Hall
Saturday, Feb. 1
Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
[folk rock, indie rock]

Phantogram

The synth duo was last in town opening for Queens of the Stone Age at Rabbit Rabbit, and though their set was sandwiched between the stoner rock titans and an intensely energetic post-hardcore performance by The Armed, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter still managed to win over the audience. With a headline slot this time around, the pair will have far more time to play all of the hits. —JL

w/ GLU
at The Orange Peel

Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
