This Week in Asheville: Jan. 12-18
Asheville’s wealth of live music, theater, and comedy offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.
Brett Naucke
Although the locally based electronic artist released his mind-altering new album, Ground Fault Matinee, back in November, he’s only now getting around to celebrating it live. In a recent Instagram post, he said this will be the first — and last — time he performs the material, so there’s no putting it off until “next time.” —Jonny Leather

Twenty years in, this punk band from Allentown, PA still hits like a sledgehammer, carrying a torch for the incendiary strain of hardcore that first surged to the surface during the Reagan years. —JL

Atmosphere
The beloved underground Minnesota hip-hop duo of Slug and Ant has been going strong since the late ’90s — releasing 14 studio albums along the way — yet they’ve never quite received the recognition they deserve. Making this an underground rap dream bill, they’ll be joined by MCs Sage Francis, R.A. the Rugged Man, Kool Keith, and DJ Mr. Dibbs. —JL

D. Portner
Perhaps better known by his Avey Tare moniker, the locally based Animal Collective member headlines the third installment of Drones in the Garden’s Winter Residency series at Revolve Gallery. Don’t come expecting his band’s hits — this set is more likely to explore the outer edges of their most experimental work, or material from his project as one-third of the experimental trio Ellicott Hooligan. —JL

Coverfest V
Since 2020, Asheville Middle School teacher Joe Hooten (known to local music fans as Tin Roof Echo and a member of Pinkeye) has organized this annual (sans COVID-19 pandemic year) daylong showcase of regional acts playing various covers to raise money for AMS 8th graders’ spring capstone trip to Washington, D.C. Santiago y Los Gatos recently revealed that it will be paying tribute to Stone Temple Pilots in its mini set, but such area peers as Lower Peaks, Blue Dragons, and Stephen Evans are keeping their selected honorees under wraps until the show. —Edwin Arnaudin
