This Week in Asheville: Aug. 26-Sept. 1

Asheville’s wealth of live music offerings can leave concertgoers feeling overwhelmed when it comes to picking which shows to attend. But have no fear! The Asheville Stages staff is here to help with insights on the week’s most appealing options.

The Linda Lindas

The all-female punk quartet became a viral sensation in 2021 with a video for the single “Racist, Sexist Boy” which was filmed at the L.A. Public Library. With members’ ages ranging from 11-16 years old at the time, the very young band defied expectations by performing an explosive punk rock song, sounding more like road-tested veterans. They’re all teenagers now, and have an additional three years of practice and touring behind them. Early singles from the upcoming No Obligation show that they’re only getting started. Local opener Secret Shame will set the bar high for the evening. —Jonny Leather

Benefit for the Brewery

In late July, a flash flood poured five feet of water into River Arts District Brewing Co’s operating space, damaging or destroying much of its core brewing equipment. Industry peers and the community at large are doing what they can to help the business recover, including local singer/songwriter Jenny Bradley, who hosts a Tuesday open mic at the brewery and has organized a benefit show in this week’s slot. Performers include Chilltonic, Melissa McKinney, Whitney Monge, Eaze Dogg, and Nick Mac. $5-$20 suggested donation. —Edwin Arnaudin

Wednesday

Headlining back-to-back nights at The Orange Peel is no small feat. It just goes to show how popular our once-local band has become in recent years. It seems like just yesterday that they were playing venues like The Odd and The Mothlight. But that was before the world heard the shoegaze-meets-alt-country powerhouse that is Rat Saw God. —JL

Gogol Bordello

Some artists just need to be experienced live to be fully understood. That’s definitely the case with this wild folk/punk outfit led by Ukrainian-born Eugune Hütz. With members hailing from all over the world, Gogol Bordello is an International band and sounds like it. The intensity of the group’s live shows has earned them a devoted fan base over the past two decades. And since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the band’s revolutionary spirit has only intensified.  —JL
